Selecting, Organizing, Using
Human, Financial, Physical
Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment |
| Taking the Administration course brought much change to the Davidson Fine Arts Library as it served as a prompt to begin an analysis of the collection and to develop a plan to develop a collection that reflected the goals and standards of our school environment. This task began with weeding the collection. Since the spring of 2006, we have removed 574 out of date resources. This process has continued to the present. This artifact reveals only a simulated experience but a real experience has occurred. We have re-arranged our shelf structure, increased thestrength of our fiction section and held several reading enrichment activities to promote it. After attending the Georgia Council of Media Organization Conference, we have begun to emphasize the Georgia Peach Book Awards. Through the artifact, I learned about the diversity of distributors and paths to find reviews of materials to be ordered. Prior to this simulation, I had placed orders only through one company. The simulation experience took me beyond the walls of school and into community. I developed a relationship with a books school support representative in Augusta.

I found that this monthly report was educational for myself and the principal in revealing ways that the resources of the Media Center were being utilized. It summarizes how our human and physical resources are being used in the learning environment. It does not address the managment of financial resources; however, within our county, the Media Specialist relates financial and budget requests through the Director of Educational Media and Technology. It would be interesting to see if the director would be receptive to receiving a monthly report that revealed spending. I've not arrived at a conclusion, but this type of reporting could also be posted on the blog if it was edited or written in a manner that could be viewed by the general public.

As a School Library Media Specialist, I will need to evaluate and assess my program using the professional standards of the field. These standards are foundational to ensure a meaningful program that is connected to student-centered learning and the community. Self-evaluation is a major tool for Media Specialists. The ability to complete it shows that the Media Specialist is a life-long learner and is committed to the field's professional standards. Working with this rubric and my practicum supervisor gave me a vision for Davidson Fine Arts School if I am to continue to work within the context and a larger vision of what employment in any media center would be. All course work at Georgia Southern University reinforced my understanding of the need for self evaluation and the need to include it in student lesson plans. At my school of employment, I would like to see this evaluation completed with a team consisting of department heads, because I believe that rubric itself has instructional value in aiding others to have knowledge of the role of the School Library Media Specialist within the learning community.
